Converse Open Gym – 2 Weeks In

The complement to Chain Link Fundamentals is Converse Open Gym where participants apply what they learned on Monday into full-court competition. Our beautiful grounds at PS 92 were installed just before the summer began and it’s “terrific for the youth basketball community in New York,” says director Eric Newman.

Our top flight staff referees the games but the kids are free to run the court as they please. The younger group takes the court from 10-12 PM followed by their older counterpart at 12:30. We’ve gotten outstanding turnout at both events so far, with over 200 participants taking the court this past Wednesday.

All participants received a reversible Converse jersey to wear at all Open Gym sessions this summer. We’ve welcomed several groups, including El Faro Beacon where AG “The Voice of Harlem” is a counselor. Naturally, he made his way to the DJ booth and hopped on the mic to cover the proceedings.

With each passing event, we reach further into the community where he hope to create an impact for years to come. Our next Open Gym is tomorrow morning, 13 and under at 10 AM and 14+ from 12:30 to 2:30 PM at PS 92. Check out all of the pics from Open Gym on our Facebook page.

Chain Link Fundamentals – Clinic Recap

With the first two weeks in the books, it’s fair to say that it’s going to be an amazing summer. The Chain Link Fundamentals clinics have been a big hit in Harlem, teaching hundreds of young ones how to play the game, giving tips to more experienced ballers, and moving kids off the street and onto the court. After all, the playground isn’t the problem, it’s the solution.

Following our successful first run on the 12th, we added a second session to cater to more students of the game, including ones coming out of camp or school. At Chain Link Fundamentals we stress the importance of academics in addition to basketball. The programming is set up in this mold, with the instruction on Monday and Open Gym on Wednesdays.

Our day starts at about 9 AM when the kids arrive to warm up and shoot around. The clinic starts at 10 with a few words of guidance from experienced NYC program director Eric Newman. The participants are grouped and begin to cycle through the six stations: shooting, rebounding, defense, ball-handling, one-on-one moves, and SPARQ training.

These clinics provide the invaluable opportunity for children of all levels to learn from ex-college and professional players who specialize in youth development, including NYC basketball icons Mike Campbell, Ira Miller, and Kenny Satterfield. It also gives them a great workout while becoming well-rounded players, and better athletes with the SPARQ component.

This summer is just the springboard for Chain Link Fundamentals in New York City. Our next clinic is Monday, July 26th at 10 AM, and the second session begins at 12:30. Be on the lookout for more in the near future!

CHAIN LINK FUNDAMENTALS MONDAY JULY 19 @ PS 92

This Monday July 19 will be the second day of Chain Link Fundamentals programming as part of the World Basketball Festival @ PS 92 located on 133rd Street and Frederick Douglas BLVD. If you have yet to register online please do so by clicking on the registration tab to the right and print out the waiver which must be presented on site. Our morning session runs from 10am – 12pm (please arrive by 9:45am) and our afternoon session runs from 12:30pm – 2:30pm (please arrive by 12:15pm) Groups are welcome!!! the Kennedy Center, which is located on 135th Street between 5th ave and
Lenox Ave (entrance on the south side of the street)

10am – 12pm for ages 11-14 and 12pm – 2pm for ages 15-18.

Please print the waiver from the registration page and bring with you to the site where you will receive a Converse Open Gym reversible jersey and where you will be able to get your run in!!!

Chain Link Fundamentals and Converse Open Gym Summer Programming Schedule

This summer Nike and USA Basketball will hold the inaugural World Basketball Festival hosted here in New York City.
Chain Link Fundamentals will hold be executing grass roots programming conjunction with Nike, Converse and Brand Jordan.

The Chain Link Fundamentals programming will take place out doors from 10am – 12pm on MONDAYS at PS 92 in Harlem, which is located at 133rd Street and Fredrick Douglas BLVD.

IN CASE OF RAIN, OUR PROGRAMMING WILL BE MOVED TO THE KENNEDY CENTER WHICH IS LOCATED ON 135th STREET BETWEEN 5TH AVE AND LENOX AVE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE STREET.

call the CHAIN LINK HOTLINE @ 646 380 0241 for the latest update in case of rain.

Each week leading up the World Basketball Festival (August 11th – August 15th) the program will build on its skill progression and life skill message towards the participants, ie TEAMWORK, COMMUNICATION & LEADERSHIP.

Chain Link Fundamentals Staff @ Rucker Park for World Basketball Festival Media Day

With the exciting news of the World Basketball Festival presented by Nike being announced last week the Chain Link Fundamentals staff was a big part of facilitating a dynamic day of basketball for both domestic and visiting media to cover the news.

At Rucker Park media members got to experience first hand what it is like to be part of the Chain Link Fundamentals experience and they couldn’t have had a better experience. While the staff did not put the pedal to the metal as far as intensity goes, the participants ran through an active agility warm-up, individual skill development stations and five on five half court scrimmages. This was just the first step in what will be a great summer of Chain Link Fundamentals programming in New York City.

Chain Link Fundamentals visits Baltimore on the eve of the NHSI

Following a terrific Chain Link Fundamentals clinic and HOH store opening in NJ, Chain Link Fundamentals traveled down to Baltimore, Maryland for two days of on court teaching leading up to the NHSI which took place at Coppin State University later in the week.

On Monday March 29th the Chain Link staff and 100 student athlete participants gathered at Lake Clifton High School for three great hours of basketball. The energy and excitement in the gym was contagious as the coaches and players gave their all to make this a terrific clinic. Being able to execute a quality program at Lake Clifton was very exciting as their legendary coach Herman “Tree” Harried was on hand to not only watch but lend a hand and speak with the Chain Link coaching staff and participants.

On Tuesday Chain Link ran it back at the Carmelo Anthony Recreation Center. Again the coaching staff and participants brought it strong for three hours working on their individual skills, conditioning and some team concepts. It was a strong back to back showing of basketball instruction and training for Chain Link Fundamentals down in Baltimore. Enjoy the pic’s below of the Carmelo Center:

Chain Link Fundamentals Hits Wayne NJ

Chain Link Fundamentals held a skills camp at the Wayne PAL for local high school student athletes. But this wasn’t any normal clinic. Former New Jersey High School state champion, Villanova standout and NBA World Champion as a member of the 2000 Los Angeles Lakers, John Celestand joined a terrific coaching staff to show the local athletes some drills that they could take home with them in order to take their games to the next level.

The clinic was then followed by the latest House of Hoops store opening at the Willowbrook Mall. Joining Celestand was current ESPN college basketball analyst Jay WIlliams the former Duke All-American and New Jersey native.

Together they helped honor players John Snow (Junior Guard from Montclair Kimberley Academy) and Brianne Traub (Junior Guard from Eastern Christian High School) along with coach Janice Walker of the East Orange All-Stars and the Jersey Jayhawks program for their role in advancing the lives of their student athletes and their role in the community.

All-Star 2010 Chain Link Fundamentals visit’s Dallas

The week leading up to the 2010 All Star game in Dallas, TX we held 5 basketball clinics where the kids trialed the Kobe V’s at the Forney Sports Center. Ekins from Houston and Dallas were on site for each clinic to discuss the benefits of the lightest basketball shoe, Kobe V, weighing in at 9 ozs. It was a crazy week due to the snowstorm, but participants managed to get to the clinic thanks to our Branded Texas Style morot coach buses to transport everyone to and from in style!
